History_
Formed in 1985 by a group of community members and musicians
who wanted to expand and enrich the musical experiences available in
our area, the Monterey Bay Symphony celebrated its 20th anniversary in
2005.
Guided by a board numbering between 15 and 20 members, the new symphony
began with an annual subscription concert series under the baton first
of Oleg Kovalenko and then of Dennis de Coteau. In the late 1980's it
became a chamber orchestra conducted by Michael Nowak. The venues
were in Carmel, Monterey, and Salinas.
Then, in 1990, directed by Drs. Jack Bayes and Carl Christensen, the
symphony adopted its current mission: to present free public pops
and patriotic concerts on national holidays, provide the orchestral
support for Monterey Opera, and be available for local private or
benefit concerts.
Since 1990, the fully professional orchestra under contract with
Musicians' Union Local 153 in San Jose has presented three free outdoor
pops and patriotic concerts annually on the lawn in front of the Old
Del Monte Hotel on the campus of the Naval Postgraduate School.
It has also occasionally presented a free indoor concert on Veterans
Day at the Monterey Conference Center.
For the past several years MBS has joined the Monterey Opera in its
operatic productions. Dr. Carl Christensen is the orchestra's
current conductor and music director.
